The controversy stems from a group of citizens who wish to drive the seals from Casa Beach (also known as Children's Pool) and restore it to a swimming area for children.

    A wide variety of mammals use Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are one of the most abundant and widespread pinnipeds in the eastern North Pacific hout their range, harbor seals haul out at near-shore sites on a regular basis and have a moderate level of fidelity to those by: Harbor Seal Pup.

When you walk along a trail overlooking the numerous pocket beaches of Point Reyes, you may catch a glimpse of shy harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).They often haul out along the Pacific Coast from the Bering Sea to Baja California, sometimes in large numbers at established colony sites.

Harbor seals hang out there too and are visible from the shoreline in many spots. North of Stinson Beach along Shoreline Highway (Hwy 1) there are several pullouts where visitors can see these animals up close.
